Do Robot Vacuums Record Video? What to Know
Camera-based navigation raises a fair question: is a robot vacuum recording your home? The answer depends on the model, the settings and the manufacturer's policy, so this guide shows what to check rather than giving one answer for all.
Quick answer
It depends on the model. Some robots use a camera only for real-time navigation, others add a live-view or video-call feature, and policies on storing or reviewing images differ by manufacturer and can change. Read your model's privacy documentation and review the app's camera and data settings.
Navigation camera vs live view
| Feature | What it is for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Navigation or obstacle camera | Detecting objects and mapping in real time | Whether images are stored or uploaded |
| Live view or remote drive | Looking around your home from the app | Whether it can be switched off |
| Video call or two-way audio | Talking through the robot | Who can access it, and the account security |
What manufacturers list
Our specification database records the camera features each maker states, without judging them: for example an RGB camera with two-way video and pet search on the Roborock Saros 10R, an AI navigation camera on the Dreame X50 Ultra, dual RGB navigation cameras on the Narwal Freo Z Ultra, and camera-based avoidance on the Roomba j7+. A listing for a feature does not tell you how images are handled.
What to look for in the documentation
- Whether images or video are processed on the device or sent to the manufacturer.
- Whether anything is stored, and for how long.
- Whether images can be used to improve products, and whether you can opt out.
- How to delete data linked to your account.
Settings worth reviewing
Most apps have a privacy or data section. Look for options related to image or video use, remote viewing and sharing. Some models keep a navigation camera active for mapping even when a live-view feature is off. See security camera features explained and cloud maps and data privacy.
If you do not want a camera
LiDAR-based robots map without a forward camera, though many models combine both. Compare navigation types in the LiDAR vs camera guide, and check the model's specifications.
Protect the account
Any remote feature depends on account security; see securing your app account.
Frequently asked questions
Is my robot vacuum watching me?
A navigation camera sees what is in front of the robot while it cleans. Whether images are kept or uploaded depends on the model and policy. Check both.
Can I cover the camera?
This could stop navigation working and may be unsupported. Check the manual, or choose a model without a camera.
Does LiDAR record images?
LiDAR measures distance, not images. Many robots combine LiDAR and a camera, so check the specifications.
