Setup & Mapping
Multi-Floor Mapping Explained
Multi-floor support lets a robot remember several maps. Here is how it generally works, what limits it, and how to plan a two-level home.
Quick answer
A multi-floor robot stores a separate map per level and works out which one it is on, usually from the dock or the app. Plan a dock on each floor if you want unattended cleans, and check your model's stated map limit.
How it works
Each floor is mapped separately and saved. When you carry the robot to another level, it either recognises the surroundings or asks you to choose the floor in the app. Manufacturers describe the number of saved maps in their specifications; where it is not stated, we do not assume one.
Mapping each floor
- Place the dock or start point on the level.
- Run a full mapping pass and save it as a new map.
- Name each map clearly, such as Ground floor and Upstairs.
- Repeat for every level, and check the maps are saved before moving on.
Docks and carrying
One dock means carrying the robot between floors and charging it in between. Two docks let you schedule unattended cleans on both levels, at extra cost; once each level has its own map you can schedule automatic cleans for each floor where the app supports it. Self-empty and washing docks are large, so most people put the automated one where they clean most.
Common problems
- The robot selects the wrong map after being carried.
- Zones from one floor appear on another after a re-map.
- Schedules run on the wrong floor when the robot has been moved.
Where to check next
For mapping fundamentals, see mapping setup; for dock placement rules, dock placement; and for cross-floor thresholds and stairs, robots generally do not climb stairs, so plan for carrying.
Frequently asked questions
How many floors can a robot store?
It depends on the model and is stated in the specifications. Check yours.
Can it clean upstairs on a schedule from downstairs?
Not without being carried. It needs to be on the right floor.
Do I need a second app account?
No. Multiple maps live under one robot.
