Where to Place the Charging Dock

Dock placement affects docking reliability more than most people expect. A few basic rules avoid the common problems.

Quick answer

Put the dock against a wall on a hard, level floor with open space either side and in front, near an outlet and within Wi-Fi range. Follow your manual for exact clearances.

Clearance

Manufacturers state a minimum clear space around the dock, often around half a metre to the sides and more in front, so the robot can approach and align. Check the figure in your manual; it varies by model.

Flooring and level

Place the dock on a hard, level floor rather than carpet or a rug. Soft or uneven ground can affect docking alignment, especially with larger automated docks.

Walls, corners and reflective surfaces

A flat wall with room either side gives the robot a reliable approach. Tight corners cause repeated failed docking. Avoid strong sunlight or shiny surfaces directly in front, which can confuse some sensors.

Power and Wi-Fi

  • Use a working outlet, not a switched one.
  • Keep the dock within Wi-Fi range of the router.
  • Hide the cable so the robot does not catch it.
  • Scheduled runs depend on the robot finding its way back, so set up automatic cleaning once the dock is in its final spot.

Larger automated docks

Self-empty and washing docks are taller and heavier, need water access on some models and want more space for tanks and trays. See self-empty base setup and our dock automation matrix for what each model documents.

Moving the dock later

The map is anchored to the dock, so moving it can affect zones and the map. Note your zones first, and see mapping setup. If it will not charge, see won't charge; if it cannot find the dock, see won't return to the dock.

Frequently asked questions

Can the dock sit on carpet?

A hard, level floor is recommended. Check your manual.

Should I put the dock in a hallway?

Only with clearance. A tight or busy space causes failed dockings.

Does it matter how close to the router?

Only for the robot's connection. Keep the dock within signal range.
