Troubleshooting

Robot Vacuum Losing Suction? Common Causes and Fixes

Gradually weaker suction is most often a maintenance issue rather than a failed motor. Work through these checks in order, cheapest and most likely first.

Quick fix

Empty the bin, clean or replace the filter, cut hair off the brush roll and check that the airway is clear. These four steps resolve most reports of weak suction.

1. Empty the bin and check the seal

A full bin reduces airflow, and a bin that does not seat fully can leak air. Empty it, wipe the seal and click it firmly into place. On self-empty models, also check the bag in the base; see self-empty base not emptying.

2. Clean or replace the filter

A clogged filter is the most common cause. Tap out or rinse it if your manual says it is washable (and let it dry fully), or replace it if not. Intervals differ by model; see how often to replace filters.

3. Clear the brush roll and side brushes

Hair and thread wrapped around the roller slow it and reduce pickup. Cut it free and check the bearings at each end; see brush roll cleaning.

4. Check for a blocked airway

Remove the bin and look through the path from the brush to the bin for lodged debris such as paper or string. Do this with the robot powered off.

5. Check the cleaning mode

Quiet or eco modes deliberately lower suction. Confirm the app is not set to a low mode, and that a schedule has not switched it.

When it may be hardware

If the robot still sounds weak after a thorough clean, follow the maker's troubleshooting steps or contact support. Worn brushes, a degraded battery and motor faults are possible causes that the steps above do not address. Check warranty status before opening the unit.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I clean the filter?

Follow the interval in your manual. Many makers recommend cleaning roughly every one to two weeks and replacing every few months, but figures vary by model.

Could the battery cause weak suction?

A worn battery can reduce power, especially on higher modes. If everything else is clean and suction is still low, ask the manufacturer.

Is weaker suction on carpet normal?

Carpet resists airflow, so pickup can look different from hard floors. A sudden change from your usual results points to maintenance.
