Robot Vacuums for Carpet vs Hard Floors: What Changes

A robot that suits hardwood is not automatically right for carpet, and mopping adds another constraint. Here is what changes between floor types and which stated specs to check for each.

Quick answer

Mostly hard floors: prioritise edge and corner reach, mopping quality and a self-washing dock. Mostly carpet: prioritise carpet detection, a stated maximum pile or threshold height, and reliable mop lifting if the robot mops. Mixed homes should favour automatic carpet detection over a design tuned for one surface.

What carpet asks of a robot

On carpet, the brush must agitate fibres and the robot has to climb the pile. Manufacturers describe this as automatic suction boost, carpet detection and, for combos, mop lifting. Pile height is rarely published, so a stated maximum carpet or rug thickness is worth noting when one exists.

For example, Roborock states a maximum carpet thickness of 1.81 inches for the Qrevo Edge 3 Pro. Most other models in our database do not state one, which is shown as "Not stated" in the threshold clearance database.

Mop lifting on mixed floors

A mopping robot that drives onto carpet with a wet pad can leave damp fibres. Makers address this with a pad that lifts a stated distance (for instance around 12 mm on some models) or a pad that detaches at the dock. Our dock automation matrix and the individual reviews list what each brand documents.

If you have rugs, check whether the robot can be told to avoid them in the app; see how to create no-go zones.

What hard floors ask of a robot

Hard floors are more forgiving on suction but show scattered debris and wet-mop marks more. Edge and corner reach, brush design that does not scatter debris, and (for mopping) consistent water delivery matter more. Tile grout and textured surfaces are a common reason to want a stronger mop pressure or pad rotation, which manufacturers state in different units.

Thresholds are part of the floor question

Moving between floor types usually means crossing a transition strip. Stated crossing heights are covered in best robot vacuum for high thresholds; measure your own before you buy.

A simple checklist

  • Measure your thickest rug and your tallest threshold.
  • Note whether the manufacturer states a carpet or crossing limit, or does not.
  • If you mop, confirm mop lift or pad removal on carpet.
  • Decide whether you want the robot to avoid rugs entirely.

Carpet and mop handling documented for models we cover

Manufacturer-stated figures from our specification database. "Not stated" means the sources we checked did not publish it; it does not mean the feature is absent.

High-pile carpet and rugs

Only one model we cover states a maximum carpet thickness, so we cannot responsibly rank robots for high-pile carpet. Measure your deepest pile and check the manufacturer's stated limit for your exact model; if none is stated, ask the manufacturer before buying. For rugs you do not want cleaned, see no-go zones.

Frequently asked questions

Does higher suction mean better carpet cleaning?

Not by itself. Suction figures are stated by each manufacturer under its own conditions, and brush design and carpet detection also affect results. Compare stated features rather than a single number.

Can a mopping robot be used on carpet?

Many can, but only with a documented mop-lift or pad-detach feature. Check your model's manual and use no-go zones for rugs where needed.

Where can I see stated carpet limits?

In the manufacturer's specification page. We list the figures we could verify in our threshold clearance database and mark the rest "Not stated".
