iRobot Roomba Combo j9+ Self-Emptying & Auto-Fill Robot Vacuum & Mop
The flagship for anyone tired of managing two robots. It vacuums and mops together, lifting the mop pad automatically on carpet, while a multi-functional base empties the bin and refills the water tank on its own.
Our review
The Combo j9+ solves the annoyance that comes with most vacuum-mop robots: having to fence off carpeted rooms so the mop does not soak them. Here the mop pad lifts automatically the moment it senses carpet, so a single cleaning run can cover hardwood, tile, and rugs in the same pass without you drawing no-mop zones in the app ahead of time.
The base backs that up by handling both halves of the maintenance — emptying the dustbin and refilling the mop’s water supply — so the robot needs less manual attention between runs than a combo that only automates one side. It inherits iRobot’s obstacle-avoidance and smart mapping from the j-series, making it the fullest-featured pick here for a home that wants vacuuming and mopping handled by one machine rather than two.

Specifications iRobot lists
The figures below were checked on the iRobot product page in September 2026 and are manufacturer-stated, not our measurements. The page does not label the order of the three robot dimensions, so we quote them as listed.

| Robot weight | 8.9 lb |
| Battery type | Lithium-ion (capacity and runtime not listed) |
| Dock dimensions (in) | 15.8 W x 16.4 D x 16.3 H |
| Dock weight | 21.9 lb |

What iRobot says the cleaning system does
- A "4-Stage Cleaning System": an edge-sweeping brush, dual rubber brushes described as avoiding pet-hair tangles, suction, and back-and-forth mopping (SmartScrub).
- An Auto-Retract Mopping System that lifts the mop to the top of the robot so it does not wet carpet, while vacuuming and mopping together on hard floors.
- "Dirt Detective" (iRobot OS), which learns from past runs to clean dirtier rooms first and adjust suction, scrubbing and passes.
- A dock with storage for extra bags and mop pads, and compatibility with a list of cleaning solutions that iRobot publishes.
- Voice control with Alexa, Siri or Google Assistant, and scheduling that can start when you leave and stop when you return.
What iRobot does not list
In the product text and specification panel we checked, iRobot does not give a suction figure in Pa, a battery capacity or runtime, a bin or tank capacity, a maximum carpet thickness, a threshold-crossing height, a mop-pad washing or drying method, or a hot-water wash temperature. A missing figure is not the same as a missing feature, but it does mean you cannot compare this robot number-for-number with models that publish them in our specification database or the dock automation matrix. Ask iRobot or check the owner's guide before relying on any of them.
Ownership notes
The dock's stated 60-day empty interval is the only consumable interval iRobot gives on the page, which works out to about six bag changes a year if the interval holds for your home. Filters, brushes and mop pads recur as well; our ownership-cost calculator takes your own prices, and the maintenance schedule covers what to check and when. The dock is large (the listed dimensions are in the table above), so read where to place the dock before choosing a spot. Related brand information: iRobot robots we cover.
Frequently asked questions
Does it really not need to avoid carpet while mopping?
It lifts its mop pad automatically when it detects carpet, so it can vacuum and mop the same route without you setting up separate no-mop zones for rugged rooms.
What does the multi-functional base do?
It empties the dustbin and refills the mopping water automatically, which is the pairing that lets the robot go longer between manual top-ups than a base that only handles one job.
Does it still need obstacle avoidance like the j7+?
Yes — it uses the same obstacle-detection approach to route around cords, pet waste, and clutter, carried over from iRobot’s j-series vacuums.
What does iRobot say the dock refills and empties?
iRobot states that the Clean Base Auto-Fill Dock empties debris for up to 60 days and refills liquid for up to 30 days. These are manufacturer figures; real intervals depend on how much you clean.
Does iRobot state the Combo j9+'s suction or battery life?
Not in the product text and specification panel we checked. It lists battery type (lithium-ion) but not capacity or runtime, and no suction figure in Pa.
