Robot Vacuum Won’t Return to Its Dock: Causes and Fixes
A robot that wanders, gives up or stops short of the dock usually has a placement, sensor or map problem rather than a failed part. Work through these checks in order; your manual has model-specific steps.
Quick answer
Move the dock to a hard, level spot against a wall with open space around it, wipe the dock and robot sensors and charging contacts, confirm the dock is powered, and check the map has not shifted. Then send the robot to the dock from the app to test.
1. Check dock position and clearance
Manufacturers state a minimum clear area around the dock; the figure varies by model, so check your manual. A dock in a tight corner, on carpet or on a soft rug is a common cause; see where to place the charging dock. Larger self-empty and washing docks need more room than a plain charging base.
2. Confirm the dock has power
A dock with no power gives the robot nothing to find. Check the outlet with another device, the cable, and any indicator light your manual describes.
3. Clean sensors and contacts
Dust on the robot's front sensors, cliff sensors or the dock's signal window can stop it locating the base, and dirty contacts stop it charging once it arrives. See cleaning sensors and won't charge.
4. Look for obstacles on the approach path
- Cables, shoes or furniture moved into the approach area.
- A rug edge or threshold in front of the dock.
- A new no-go zone or virtual wall that blocks the path.
5. Check the map and dock location
If the dock was moved, or the map shifted, the robot may head for the old location. Some models need the dock position updated or the map rebuilt; check your manual first, because a rebuild can erase zones. See map lost or wrong and mapping setup.
6. Battery and errors
A very low battery can stop a robot short of the dock. Look for an error in the app and check error codes. If the robot repeatedly circles instead of docking, see stuck in a loop.
When to contact the manufacturer
If placement, sensors, contacts and map are all fine and the robot still cannot dock, the docking sensor or dock signal may be faulty. Note the model, firmware version and what the robot does, then ask the manufacturer, especially if it is under warranty.
Frequently asked questions
Does the dock need to be on the same floor as the map?
Yes. Each saved map is tied to a dock location. See multi-floor mapping if you use more than one level.
Can a self-empty dock be placed anywhere?
It needs the clearance, power and headroom your manual specifies, which are usually larger than for a plain base.
Will moving the dock erase my map?
It can affect it on some models. Check the manual before moving the dock.
