Voice Control: Robot Vacuums with Alexa and Google Assistant

Voice control adds convenience, but it has real limits. It is worth knowing what commands do before you rely on them, and what the manufacturer says your model supports.

Quick answer

Link the robot's manufacturer app to Alexa or Google Home as a skill or linked service, then use simple commands such as start, stop, pause and dock. Room-specific and detailed control is more reliable in the app. Support differs by model, so check the spec listing.

How the link works

The robot does not pair directly with a smart speaker. You link the manufacturer's account in the Alexa or Google Home app, and the speaker sends requests through the manufacturer's cloud. That means the robot needs to be online and the app account must stay linked; see connecting to Wi-Fi.

Commands that usually work

  • Start, pause, resume and stop a clean.
  • Send the robot back to its dock.
  • Ask for status where the skill supports it.
  • Start a named room clean, on some models, if rooms are named in the app.

What often does not work by voice

Fine control such as suction level, mop water level or custom zones is usually app-only. Naming rooms clearly helps; see room naming and selective room cleaning.

What manufacturers state

Our specification database records the voice support each maker lists: for example Alexa on the eufy X10 Pro Omni and Roomba j7+, Alexa and Siri on the Dreame L40 Ultra Gen 2, and a built-in voice assistant on the Roborock Qrevo Edge 3 Pro. Where a listing does not mention voice control, the database shows "Not stated" rather than assuming.

If it stops responding

  • Check the robot is online in its own app first.
  • Re-link the skill if the account token expired.
  • Rename devices or rooms to something simple.
  • Confirm the speaker and robot are on working networks.

Privacy

Voice control means another company sees the commands. See cloud maps and data privacy and check the account settings for each service.

Frequently asked questions

Can I say "clean the kitchen"?

Some integrations support it if rooms are named in the app. Support varies by model and platform.

Does voice control work when Wi-Fi is down?

Generally no, except on models that state offline voice control. Check the listing.

Do I need a smart speaker?

Not for the app. A speaker or phone assistant is only needed for voice commands.
