How to Set Up a Self-Empty Base

A self-empty base needs a little more setup than a plain charging dock. Getting it right avoids the most common early problems.

Quick answer

Place the base on a hard, level floor with clearance, install the bag or bin as your manual shows, power it, then dock the robot after a clean and watch the first empty cycle.

Placement

Follow the dock rules in where to place the dock, and leave headroom, since bases are taller than plain docks. Use a working outlet, not a switched one.

Install the bag or bin

  • Open the base and check for packaging or seals.
  • Fit the bag or bin and confirm it is seated in its slot.
  • Close the lid until it clicks.
  • Check the bag or filter indicator, if the base has one.

The first empty cycle

The base empties the robot after it docks, usually after a clean rather than continuously. It may skip a cycle when the bin is lightly filled, which is normal. Bag intervals are stated by each manufacturer; see our dock automation matrix.

What is normal

  • A loud burst of suction when it empties.
  • The robot pausing on the dock during the cycle.
  • Dust visible in the bag afterwards.

If it will not empty

Check the bag seat, seal, filter and any blockage at the intake; see self-empty base not emptying. For upkeep, read cleaning the base. If you are still deciding, see do you need one?

Frequently asked questions

How often do I replace the bag?

Follow your manual. Some manufacturers state an interval in days; our matrix lists the ones we verified.

Can I use third-party bags?

Fit and filtration vary, and we do not have verified data on them. Check the listing and the maker's warranty terms.

Why is it so loud?

The emptying burst is short but strong, and is generally expected.
