Setup & Mapping
First-Time Robot Vacuum Setup Checklist
Most early frustration with a new robot vacuum comes from doing setup steps out of order. This checklist runs in the order that avoids re-doing work; your manual has the model-specific details.
Quick answer
Place and power the dock, charge the robot, pair it in the app on a 2.4GHz network, clear the floor, then let it finish a complete first mapping run before you label rooms, draw no-go zones or set a schedule.
1. Unbox and remove packaging
- Remove transport film, brush guards and battery tabs. Your manual lists the ones for your model.
- Fit the side brushes and any mop tank or pad if included.
- Confirm the bin and filter are installed.
2. Place the dock first
The map is anchored to the dock, so put it where it will stay. Choose a hard, level floor with open space on both sides and in front; see where to place the charging dock. Moving it later can affect the saved map.
3. Charge, then connect
Let the robot charge before its first clean. Then pair it in the manufacturer's app. Most robots need a 2.4GHz network during pairing; see connecting to Wi-Fi, or Wi-Fi troubleshooting if pairing fails.
4. Prepare the floor
Clear cords, socks and small objects, and flatten rug edges. The full list is in preparing your home for the first clean.
5. Run the first map uninterrupted
Open interior doors, leave lights on if your robot uses a camera, and let the run finish without lifting or moving the robot. See how to set up mapping.
6. Then customise
- Name and split rooms (room naming).
- Add no-go zones (no-go zones).
- Set up a robot vacuum cleaning schedule.
- If you bought a self-empty base, follow its setup steps.
Before you buy accessories
Note how often your manual says to replace filters, brushes and pads; the ownership-cost calculator turns that into a yearly figure using your own prices.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to charge fully before the first clean?
Most manuals recommend it. Check yours, since some allow a first run at partial charge.
Should I set up zones before the first map?
No. Zones attach to the map, so create the map first and draw zones afterwards.
What if the first map looks wrong?
Most apps let you edit room boundaries. Re-map only if the layout is badly off.
